This film was originally created in 2008, and updated with a new edit in 2014 to more accurately reflect current statistics; it was produced, directed, shot and re-edited by Mary Olive Smith. The goal of this customer service training film is to heighten library staff awareness of issues related to the autism community and to empower them to provide better service to this growing population. We developed the film and this website as an overview for providing customer service tips to better serve those in the autism community, and have found that providing staff with this training increases their comfort level in interacting effectively with those in the autism community. In addition, it improves their ability to provide more inclusive and effective customer service to everyone who uses the library, as the basic customer services skills and techniques provided can serve as universal models for best-practices library service to all members of the public.
